Heavenly Surprises!

Scriptures: 2 Kings 2:1-12; Ps 50:1-6; 2 Cor 4:3-6; Mk 9:2-9

Last Sunday, my kids, grandkids, and I all drove up to Valdosta, GA, to see the first three episodes of season 4 of “The Chosen.”  If you have not tuned in to watch it, I highly recommend it.  It very closely follows Scripture.  And the actor who plays Jesus does a phenomenal job!  You can purchase the first three seasons’ worth on video now.

I won’t spoil the suspense, but let me just say that season 4 begins with Jesus’ frustration over the fact that His disciples do not really understand His mission.  We saw last week, in Mark 1:29-39, that they assumed He would remain in Capernaum, healing all that needed Him there.

He assertively redirected them.  He told them in v. 38 Let us go somewhere else—to the nearby villages—so I can preach there also.  That is why I have come.  His mission was greater than serving just Capernaum.  They kept trying to guide Him here and there–or to protect Him from this Roman soldier or that Pharisee–according to their ideas of what the Messiah should be doing.  But He kept gently resisting their need to control or to shape His ministry.

Imagine, then, how unsettling it must have been for Peter, James and John to have witnessed Jesus’ transfiguration!  Isn’t it true that we form these ideas of how God should act, and then are so surprised or even shocked when He behaves in ways we never imagined?  Let’s look at what our Scriptures today have to say about this phenomenon:

A. The Gospel (Mark 9: 2-9) is Peter’s (via John Mark) account of the Transfiguration.  Peter had earlier proclaimed to Jesus (in Mark 8:29)—You are the Christ (Lk 9:20—the Christ of God).  The word, Christ, remember, is a title—the Greek word for anointed one, or Messiah, in the Hebrew.  Peter gets that Jesus is indeed the long awaited Messiah.

Luke tells us it was about 8 days after this (Mark tell us it was 6) that Jesus took the three with Him (9:28)—…onto a mountain to pray.  Imagine their thoughts when they observed Him in all of His heavenly glory!

Luke describes His face changing, and His clothes…(v.29)—…became as bright as a flash of lightning.  Mark (v.3) describes the same thing this way—His clothes became dazzling white, whiter than anyone in the world could bleach them.  Matthew writes (17:2)—His face shone like the sun, and His clothes became as white as the light.  They used the words they had to describe the incredible brightness of how Jesus shone.  These three disciples were being treated to a mind-blowing sight!  (I have seen something similar as I work with clients who are in a residential treatment center for addictions and mental health issues.  Their pictures are taken when they first arrive; but as they learn, grow, and heal, their visages change so as to be almost unrecognizable from those original photographs.  There is a transformation that takes place that is seemingly miraculous.)

In addition, the three disciples see the long dead but clearly resurrected Moses and Elijah talking with Jesus.  If that were not all, then they are treated to hearing the actual voice of God the Father speaking from out of a cloud (v.7)—This is My Son Whom I love.  Listen to Him!  (not to your ideas of what He should do, but to My ideas….) 

If you had been there to witness this Heavenly Surprise, wouldn’t you have been shaken up? Jesus is not just the long-awaited for Messiah, the Christ, the anointed One.  He is God incarnate!  How would that realization shape your responses to Him?  How would that new, earth-shaking knowledge shift your ideas of what he can and cannot, should or should not do?  I believe any of us would immediately move to “Who are we to try to direct Him to do what we want?”  Or, “Who are we to try to protect Him from anyone?”

B.  Our Psalm (50:1-6) fits this set of insights so nicely.  Asaph, the choir director, tells us that when God speaks (v.1)—He…summons the earth from the rising of the sun to the place where it sets.  Our most powerful God has created the sun and set the earth into an orbit such that it appears the sun rises and sets over planet earth.  Additionally, God manifests in fire and tempests, when He appears in judgment.  He is so powerful that when He summons the heavens or the earth, these great celestial creations do His will.  Asaph wants us to realize (v.6) our God is all powerful and totally righteous…and so too is Jesus!

Scripture talks about Mary, Jesus’ Mother, who (Luke 3:51)— treasured all these things in her heart.  Can’t you just picture Peter, James, and John all doing the same?  Pondering this great heavenly surprise; trying to process it, to figure out what this meant for and to them.

C.  This is what Paul is referring to in 2 Corinthians 4:3-6.  He directly follows this up in verse 7—We have this treasure in jars of clay to show that this all-surpassing power is from God and not from us.

What is the treasure to which Paul is referring?  It is the knowledge that Jesus Christ is God Himself, come to live among us and to die to redeem us.  What are the jars of clay?  Those are us!  We are fragile repositories of this great and precious knowledge.

Paul describes Jesus among us as a light (v.6)—like the light of His transfiguration—which shine[s] out of the darkness.  It illuminates this dark world.  It guides us and gives us comfort.  Best of all, this light of Christ, this heavenly surprise— shine[s] in our heats to give us the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.  Jesus draws us into His redeeming light.  Knowing Jesus, loving Jesus, ensures we will dwell with Him in His light eternally.

D. Then we have this unusual passage from 2 Kings 2:1-12.

What a send-off for a mighty prophet!  Elisha, his loyal side-kick, goes with Elijah on his farewell tour.  Directed by the Lord, they say goodbye to prophets at Gilgal, Bethel, and Jericho.  Elisha remains with his mentor as they cross the Jordan River, moving outside the Promised Land.

Then Elijah asks Elisha what he wants (v.9)—”Let me inherit a double portion of your spirit,” Elisha replied.  It may sound greedy to us, but what it meant was that Elisha saw himself as Elijah’s spiritual son and wanted what a firstborn son would inherit from his father, a double-portion (all the rest got divided among any other children).  He was essentially asking to be equipped to carry on his spiritual father’s ministry.

This was a difficult request for Elijah to honor as the prerogative to instill Elisha with Elijah’s power belonged to God alone.  God must have quickly told the older prophet that the heir would know his request had been granted if he saw Elijah jet off to heaven.  This is exactly what happens!

What a heavenly surprise, what a dramatic exit!  Elijah is carried away by a chariot and horses of fire.  Elisha witnesses this and knows his request has been granted.  He grieves the loss of his mentor, but he is allowed to see that Elijah is…taken up to heaven, bodily, without dying—like Enoch (see Genesis 5:24); and taken away outside the promised land without leaving a grave, like Moses.  This is a bigger deal than the funeral of a king.  The Lord is saying Elijah, and now Elisha–and not an apostate king–is the true representative of God on earth.

Once again, in a spectacular fashion, our Lord demonstrates the truth of Isaiah 55:8-9—”For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways,” declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts.”  Who would think that the Lord would carry off His prophet in a fiery chariot?  Who would think Jesus would appear to His 3 favorites as His pre-Incarnate, heavenly self?  How terrific of God to frame these events in bright lights and pyrotechnics we might never even think of!  If we had seen them, our faith would never waver, would it?

Not only that, but do you see that our Lord is capable of spectacular surprises?  Peter, James, and John must have been blown away by what they saw and heard on the Mount of Transfiguration with Jesus.  Elisha, too, must have pondered what he had seen at length.  Such events expand exponentially our concept of what God is capable of.

Additionally, as the disciples eventually discovered, we don’t want to be found thinking we can direct God or dictate to Jesus what He will do.  If we do, we will find ourselves highly disappointed.  We hear people express anger because God did not do what they prayed for.  The truth is we can ask, but we cannot demand.  He will answer, but He may tell us “Yes,” “No,” or “Not yet.”  We need to remember that God is God and we are not.

Feel the Fear and Obey God Anyway!

Scriptures: Jonah 3:1-10; Ps 62:5-12; 1 Cor 7:29-31; Mk 1:14-20

Consider this for just a moment: Last week we addressed how we recognize when God is speaking to us. We get a nudge in our spirit. It’s usually not an audible voice, but rather a kind of message that drops into our head. I have come to recognize it as it doesn’t sound like “normal me.” With increased experience in discerning God’s voice, we learn that we want to obey the Voice/Him. But what if the Voice/the Knowing asks us to do something terrifying? What if God wants us to walk down the center of the Gaza Strip, trying to tell Hamas to lay down their arms and come to Jesus, and they have 40 days to do this or face annihilation?

What if the Lord wants to use us to bring these terrorists to Christ? We know He is Immanuel, God with us, so we would not walk the Gaza Strip alone. But there are plenty of missionaries who have lost their lives while trying to bring the Gospel message to those who have not heard it. Jim Elliott comes to mind. At 28 years old, he and 4 others were killed, in 1956, by the very people they intended to serve, the Huaorani or Auca Indians of Ecuador. He is famously remembered for the following quote: He is no fool who gives what he cannot keep to gain that which he cannot lose. To give up what you cannot keep your life; to gain what you cannot lose your salvation, or your relationship with Jesus. Or what about the Rev. Thomas Baker, a Wesleyan missionary, who was killed and eaten by the very cannibals of Figi, on July 21, 1867, that he had intended to convert?

When the Lord sends us into dangerous situations, we have no guarantee that we will live through them.

This may have been Jonah’s thinking when the Lord told him to go evangelize the Assyrians of Nineveh.

Before we examine his actions, let’s take a look at Jonah, the man: We don’t know much about him, except that he appeared to minister around 760BC. He came from Jesus’ home area of Galilee, specifically from Gath-hepher, a village 3 miles north of Nazareth. He is the only prophet of the Old Testament from Galilee—a home to many Gentiles. (Think about how well the Lord hid Jesus. The Jewish religious leadership would never have thought to look for their Messiah among the Gentiles.) But living among “outsiders” would have given him experience with non-Jewish culture. Incidentally, he and Daniel are the only Old Testament prophets to the Gentiles. Jonah is called a minor prophet–not because his ministry wasn’t important–but because his book is so short (just 4 chapters. I encourage you to go home and read it if you have not already).

Nevertheless, Jonah was amazingly effective. Rev. Dr. J. Vernon McGee contends that he led the greatest revival of all times! (Thru the Bible Commentary Series: Jonah, Thomas Nelson, 1991, p.55.) All of Nineveh repented ! He went in fearing for his life, and—even if his efforts were timid or half-hearted—even if he hated the Assyrians, God used him to bring many lost terrorists to Himself.

What would prompt these violent and barbarous people to listen to Jonah? After 3 days in a great fish, he would have been hairless, bald–no beard, not even any eye-brows or eye-lashes. Also, from modern day rescues of people swallowed by large fish/whales, the creature’s stomach acid turns human skin a yellow-orange color. Obviously Trump is not the first “orange man.” Jonah surely looked weird and would have attracted a crowd wherever he stepped in Nineveh. When they asked what had happened to him, he could honestly say, “I was rescued from the belly of a large fish by the Hebrew God. He’s given you an ultimatum: repent within 40 days or else.

The back-story to our Psalm today (62:5-12) gives us another example of someone responding to a difficult call from God. It was written by King David in his elder years. The context is a rebellion against his rule (a coup attempt) led by his favorite son, Absolom. Absolom, together with former friends of David’s, and an Israelite army disloyal to the King, enter Jerusalem by one gate, while the elderly and grieved David is forced to flee–with his court, advisors and army personnel still loyal to him–by another gate. David is feeling rejected and betrayed by his son, broken-hearted, and filled with grief. He is fleeing for his life and no doubt wonders where God is in all of this. Yet look at the theme of his psalm: Like Jonah in the big fish, he expresses his trust in God! He is forced from his capital city in defeat, but instead of being caught up in bitterness or a desire for revenge, he expresses optimism and praises the Lord! In verse 9, He says he doesn’t put his trust in the fickle mob, nor in individual men, but in God. In verse 10, He says he doesn’t trust in material things either. Instead (verse 11), he puts his trust in God because God is powerful and God is able! He also trusts in God (verse 12) because he knows God is merciful and will not abandon him.

Notice, Paul says essentially the same thing 10 centuries later (1 Cor 7:29-31). Paul is clear that our time on earth is short. Nineveh had 40 days. The world as we know it could end tomorrow or next year. Paul exhorts us to put God first, not allowing our lives to be consumed by earthly things. He says we should not put all of our attention on our spouses or our friends. His book is not a prophesy but an account of this experience: He hears God and his discerns rightly that he is to go to Nineveh. He is to preach a message of repentance. He is to give them a deadline 40 days or they are toast. Now Nineveh was a large metropolitan area, a city with suburbs if you will. It sat at the conjunction of the Tigris and Upper Zeb Rivers in the nation of Assyria. Today we would say it lay near Mosul, in N. Iraq. Scripture refers to it as a “great city” verse 3 Now Ninevah was a very important/great city—a visit required 3 days. It had a circumference of 27 miles, and was 2.5 miles long and 1.33 miles across. It likely did take 3 days to walk through. Think about how long it would take to walk across Jacksonville, FL, from the West side to the Beaches, or across Orlando, FL, from Disney east to Deltona. Scholars estimate there were anywhere from ½ to 2 million inhabitants in metro-Nineveh. So, again, consider how you might feel if God told you to go to Mosul today—or to the Gaza Strip—to walk through, and to preach the gospel to a hostile audience of anti-Christian terrorists.

Jonah gets the call and promptly boards a ship headed in the opposite direction. He buys a one-way ticket to Tarshish/Tartessus, Spain, near Gibralta. He was headed about as far as you could get, going west, from Mosul/Nineveh in the east. He was effectively telling God, “I think this a bad idea; If it is all just the same with you, no thanks, Lord! Let me serve You somewhere else.”

We know the rest of the story though: God sends a huge storm, the ship is nearly swamped, and the sailors believe Jonah is the problem and throw him overboard. He is promptly swallowed by a huge fish. Inside the belly of the whale or fish, he realizes that his disobedience and fear have brought him to this dire situation. So he calls out to God in a prayer of praise, in advance, for his rescue (what faith!). God graciously has the fish burp him up on a beach. Thus chastened, Jonah now heads to Niveveh.families; nor on any grief or tragedy that has befallen us; nor on our own pleasure; not our possessions; not even our business enterprises. He wants us to keep our eyes focused on Jesus.

These are such good lessons for us in these uncertain times, aren’t they? When…

1.) wild-eyed and unhinged political zealots are calling for revenge and plotting retribution toward their enemies;

2.) new viruses have morphed and ramped up their killing capacity yet again;

3.) hyper-inflation is eating up whatever financial resources we have;

4.) we see our civil rights challenged and curtailed by big tech, big business, big media, and big government;

5.) millions of illegal immigrants swarm across our borders to be subsidized by our tax dollars. When these things happen, we need to put our trust in God.

Like Jonah, we can be obedient and stand back and watch the Lord do miracles! Like King David, we can trust in Him despite our circumstances…remembering that God has the power to protect us and that He is merciful. He doesn’t demand that we be perfect (the more I feel pressured to be perfect, the more mistakes I tend to make). He just wants us to, like King David, trust in Him; like the prophet Jonah, to obey Him; and like Paul says, to put Him first.

Come and Hear for Yourself!

Scriptures: 1 Sam 3:1-20; Ps 139:1-6, 13-18; 1Cor 6:12-20; Jn 1:43-51

This weekend, I attended a Retreat put on by my former church in Gainesville, Florida, Servants of Christ Anglican Church. The retreat leadership had texted me in early October to ask me to come and graciously offered to pay my expenses. Later, I learned this was the same weekend of the inaugural conference in Florida of the Global Methodist Church. My head told me I should cancel the healing conference and attend the meeting of our new church peers. But I believe the Holy Spirit protested and insisted I attend the healing retreat instead. Sometimes that is exactly what happens: The Holy Spirit urges you to do one thing while your practical, cognitive mind argues the opposite. I have learned over the years to always obey the leading of the Spirit.

The retreat was held in Steinhatchee, Florida, a fishing village on the Gulf Coast. For the past week and a half, I had been experiencing pain in both hips—pain when walking and pain on trying to rise from a chair or to navigate steps. By the time I arrived Friday evening, I could hardly walk. By Saturday afternoon, when they held their healing service, I had figured out that my feet, my knees, and my hips all needed healing from pain. At night when I laid down to sleep, my legs throbbed. It occurred to me that Satan was trying to either handicap me or to take me out of active ministry. The team I approached for prayer agreed that he was attacking me from the ground up. They prayed that the Holy Spirit would then flood me with a healing anointing from my head down. I immediately felt relief, especially in my hips. No more pain! They had bound the powers of hell from inflicting pain upon me and they prayed that the Lord Jesus would heal and restore me. Like the woman with the 12 year issue of blood (Mark 5:21-43), I had the faith that the Lord had healed me. Since then, with any twitch or ache in my feet, legs, or hips, I have audibly affirmed that I have been healed and have observed that the pain then desists. Clearly the Holy Spirit wanted me to attend that retreat and I am so glad I listened.

This brings me to an important set of questions for you: Do you hear from the Holy Spirit? Do you hear from the Lord? Do you have a place where you can go to be alone and communicate with or hear from the Lord? Many people refer to this special place as their “prayer closet.” It’s separate from other spaces in a house. When you are there, you can count on not having your prayer time disturbed. It’s lovely if you can dedicate a small room or even a walk in closet for this effort. If not, your prayer closet may be your car or your shower; it may also be your garden or your daily jog or walk, or even when you do the dishes. The main point is to locate a space and visit it regularly so you can talk to God and hear back from Him.

In this vein, I want to focus on today’s Gospel, Psalm 139, and our 1st Samuel reading.

A. In our Gospel lesson today (John 1:43-51), Jesus is calling His disciples. In verses 35-42, just prior to today’s reading, Jesus calls the first 3: Andrew and Peter, Andrew’s brother–both from Bethsaida; and a third un-named one who Church tradition says is John, the Gospel’s author. In today’s passage–which takes place 1 day later–Jesus calls Philip. Philip then locates his friend, Nathanael, and tells him (v.45) We have found the one Moses wrote about in the Law, and about whom the prophets also wrote—Jesus of Nazareth, the son of Joseph. Nathanael responds rather sarcastically Nazareth! Can anything good come from there? Philip then invites Nathanael to come and see for himself.

Now let’s take a deeper look at Nathanael. He is also known in Scripture as Bartholomew. Confusingly for us, his names are used interchangeably in the New Testament. Scholars believe Bartholomew may have been what we would call his “last name.” Remember Peter had been known as Simon Bar Jonah, son of Jonah. Nathanael may have been called Nathanael Bar Tolmai, or son of Tolmai, which eventually morphed into Bartholomew.

We don’t know much about him except that he was honest–even perhaps to a fault—and skeptical. It appears he was from Cana, a rival village just over the hill from Nazareth, so he may have been calling on village prejudice when he doubted the Messiah could ever come from Nazareth. It is his honesty that impresses Jesus, Who calls him (v.47) …a true Israelite, in whom there is no guile/nothing false/no deceit.

Jesus is saying that, unlike the Jewish patriarch, Jacob, who was a schemer and a cheat, Nathanael is not. Jesus recognizes him as a guy who calls a spade a spade. He has integrity; he’s authentic; he is not an insincere fake.

Nathanael is naturally curious about how Jesus recognized him and read his character so correctly, since they had never met before. Jesus tells him that He saw him (v.49) …when you were under the fig tree. Fig trees grow out kind of round with branches that may dip to the ground. If a man crawled inside, he could lean against the trunk and be nearly hidden. Or, if the tree were older and larger, he could find respite from the sun and support for his back as he sat beneath it. This is where Jesus had a vision of him. Afterall Jesus, as God, is omniscient, knowing all things. Jesus knew this is where Nathanael had gone to study Scripture and to pray. As He does with any of us (see Psalm 139), Jesus knows our thoughts. There is no place we can run to and hide from Him. Nathanael had been studying Scripture in his “fig tree prayer closet,” seeking to know God better. So Jesus calls him as a disciple.

We can also safely assume, I think, that Nathanael had accurate insight or spiritual discernment. In verse 49 he says Rabbi, You are the Son of God; You are the King of Israel. In that moment, in that brief interaction, Nathanael realizes Jesus’ true identity. Jesus is more than a Rabbi. Jesus, referring back again to the patriarch, Jacob, tells Nathanael he will …see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man (v. 51). The pre-incarnate Christ is the one Jacob saw in his dream of a ladder with angels ascending and descending. Here He is telling Nathanael that He, Jesus, is the ladder [the bridge; the mediator] between God and humankind. Philip invited Nathanael to come and see; but Jesus drew him near to see and hear for himself.

B. Oh, that we all might be such serious readers of Scripture, such dedicated followers of Christ. Our Old Testament lesson from 1 Samuel 3:1-20 describes another person who came forward and heard for himself. In gratitude to God, the barren Hannah, when she conceived and bore Samuel, obediently took him to be mentored and trained up for service to the Lord by Eli, the priest. Samuel was probably 3 years old when Hannah delivered him to Eli, as Hebrew women tended to nurse their babies for that length of time. Unfortunately, Eli was not a good father. His two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, were notoriously evil men. They served at the temple, but had contempt for the Lord and for their father. Eli rebuked them but did not remove them from their priestly duties. Later, God Himself pronounced a death sentence on them and had them killed by the Philistines.

Despite his lack of success as a father, Eli functioned as Samuel’s mentor. Samuel was about 12 or so when God called him twice. Samuel thought he was being paged from sleep by Eli because he did not at this point discern the Lord’s voice. We are told in verse 7 Now Samuel did not yet know the Lord: The word of the Lord had not yet been revealed to Him. This does not reflect at all well upon Eli as a priest. Shame on him! Samuel has been serving God in His Temple at Shiloh for 9 years, but Eli has not taught him about God! YIKES! Telling people about God is the primary job of a priest. No wonder the Lord is going to strip the priesthood from Eli and his descendants. We find in this passage that God is initiating a long-overdue relationship with the young man who had been destined to serve Him since before his birth.

The third time God called him and Samuel mistakenly responded to Eli, Eli figured out that it was the Lord Who was summoning Samuel. Eli tells him to listen to and respond to God the next time He calls his name. Sure enough, God calls him a 4th time and this time Samuel says,(v.10) Speak, for your servant is listening. God then declares a judgment against Eli and his descendants. He also installs Samuel as his prophet, now replacing judges and priests as God’s spokespersons.

So what does this mean for us? Psalm 139 assures us that God knows us and knows our thoughts even before we express them. He seeks us out for relationship. He delights in responding to those of us who have sought Him. And He reveals Himself to those who are ignorant of Him.

If we want to have an intimate relationship with the Lord, we need to spend regular time communicating with Him. We need to locate or set up a prayer closet. We need to spend time reading and thinking about God’s Word.

In closing, I want to share a Christian song with you. It’s sometimes used at funerals—in fact, I would love to have it sung at mine—but it also refers to having attuned your ears to hear from the Lord. In 2010, I went with 9 others on a mission trip to Turkey. This song became our theme song. We sang it to a house church of 40 Iranian Christians, who had already worked a 12 hour day, and yet who crammed themselves into a hot, unairconditioned room in a town in Turkey to worship God and to hear from us. May we all come forth and hear (and respond to) the Holy Spirit when He calls us.

Arise, Shine, for God’s Light has Come!

Scriptures: Isa 60:1-6; Ps 72:1-14; Eph 3:1-12; Matt 2:1-12

In Rome, there is an ancient burial site containing the remains of hundreds of Christians from the 2nd to the 5th century. Known as the “Catacombs of Priscilla” for the wealthy Roman lady who donated the property, the series of underground tombs also includes some significant artwork by early Christians–including one of baby Jesus with His mother, Mary, and surprisingly, the pagan prophet, Balaam. But instead of gazing at the Madonna and Child, the prophet is pointing to a star over their heads.

Perhaps you remember hearing of this “prophet for hire” as he is depicted in Numbers 22-24? If not, take time to read this account as it is both humorous and fascinating. Apparently, the Moabite King, Balak, was alarmed to learn that the Children of Israel were advancing on his country, on their way to the Promised Land. Biblical scholars believe there may have been as many as 2 million Israelites, so they would represent quite a threat to anyone whose land they crossed. King Barak did not believe he was strong enough to defeat them in battle—in fact, Moses reports in Numbers 22:3 that he and his whole nation were… filled with dread because of the Israelites. So he sent for a Prophet for hire, Balaam, and asked him to curse them, telling him (Numbers 22:5-6) A people has come out of Egypt; they cover the face of the land and have settled next to me. Now come and put a curse on these people, because they are too powerful for me. Perhaps then I will be able to defeat them and drive them out of the country. For I know that those you bless are blessed, and those you curse are cursed.

Obviously this Balaam had some power. But as you follow the story, you learn that God Himself talks to Balaam and forbids him to curse His Chosen People. King Balak tries to talk Balaam out of being obedient to God every way he can; but the prophet appears to rightly fear the One True God and wisely refuses to curse the Israelites. Even though Balak is furious with him, Balaam continues to bless Israel and prophesies to Balak (Numbers 24:17) I see Him [Messiah], but not now; I behold Him, but not near. A star will come out of Jacob [the Epiphany Star]; a scepter will rise out of Israel [a future king; Jesus].

I find it fascinating—don’t you?—that hundreds of years (1450-1500BC) before Jesus’ birth and the appearance of the Magi, a nonbelieving prophet-for-hire would tell of the appearance of the Star, and prophesy the 1st coming of Christ. The star signaled Jesus’ birth to Gentiles. This star moved, it traveled to the West from the East, and the 3, 12, or 30 magi from the East, followed it to Jerusalem, then on to Bethlehem to worship the infant King. (Tradition says there were 3 kings, because of the three gifts, gold, frankincense, and myrrh; but there may have been more, especially since all of Jerusalem was in an uproar over their sudden appearance. Three would seem too few to cause a city-wide reaction. Perhaps there were more and no doubt they were accompanied by soldiers for protection.) So their arrival was probably notable and provoked curiosity and speculation. Instead of fireworks, the star was a heavenly manifestation of something truly big and important going on. Folks in that time and era were much more tuned in to the movements of the stars and the appearance of new ones than many of us are today. For those who studied such things, this was an exciting phenomenon which led to an Epiphany (God-sighting).

We celebrate this Epiphany, the visitation of the Magi to honor Baby Jesus today, Epiphany Sunday. Three of our Scripture passages refer to this event.

A. Our Old Testament lesson, Isaiah 60:1-6, appears to ratify or agree with Balaam’s older prophesy. Isaiah (writing from 750-700BC) states in verses 1-3 Arise, shine, for your light has come and the glory of the Lord rises upon you. See, darkness covers the earth and thick darkness is over the peoples, but the Lord rises upon you and His glory appears over you. Nations will come to Your light and kings to the brightness of Your dawn. The prophet uses the Hebrew prophetic tense that speaks of things which have not yet taken place as though they have already come to be. Just as Balaam appeared to have viewed the star to come as a metaphor for Jesus, so too does Isaiah equate Messiah with heavenly light. He is predicting that the “Son of Righteousness,” Jesus, will arise upon Israel just as the sun rises out of and dissipates pitch darkness. Those were dark times in Israel, as they lived under Roman oppression, just as these are dark times for us. But, Jesus has come as our Redeemer. And He will come again to finally free the earth from the grips of evil.

Additionally, Isaiah foretells the arrival again—at Jesus’ 2nd Coming–of kings bringing gifts. They will bring gold and incense (frankincense), but no myrrh—an embalming compound–as death will have been eradicated.

B. Psalm 72 was written by King David as a prayer for the success of his son, Solomon, as he is crowned David’s successor.

In it, King David describes the traits of the ideal king (around 960BC). While these are the hopes of a proud father, the psalm also describes—at a deeper level—the reign of the coming Messiah: Messiah will judge the accused with absolute justice or fairness. He will crush oppressors and defend the vulnerable. He will live forever. He will ensure prosperity for all. He will rule all the earth. And, in what seems like a foretelling of today’s Gospel, (v.10) The kings of Tarshish [modern Spain], and of distant shores will bring tribute to Him; the kings of Sheba [Yemen] and Seba [Sudan or Ethiopia] will present Him gifts.

C. Our Gospeler, Matthew, was intent on proving to the Jewish people how Jesus fulfilled so many of the Old Testament prophesies about Messiah. In today’s passage (2:1-22), he demonstrates how Jesus fulfilled 4 such predictions:

(1)He points out that Jesus was born in Bethlehem and quotes the passage from Micah 5:2 But you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah…out of you will come a ruler who will be the shepherd of my people Israel. So the minor prophet, speaking for God, precisely predicted Jesus’ birthplace. He was a contemporary of Isaiah, and so wrote during the same time period. He relates how Jesus had to be taken into Egypt to protect Him from Herod’s jealousy. Joseph is told in a dream to leave Bethlehem by night and take Mary and the baby to Egypt.

(2) Hosea, also a contemporary of Isaiah, had prophesied in chapter 11, verse 1 Out of Egypt I called my son. God had planned in advance to have Jesus escape Herod’s “slaughter of the innocents.”

(3) But Jeremiah (626-586BC) had predicted in chapter 31, verse 15 A voice is heard in Ramah [the vicinity of Bethlehem], weeping and great mourning, Rachel [a personification of Jewish mothers] weeping for her children and refusing to be comforted, because they are no more.

(4) Finally, Matthew tells us they relocated from Egypt to Nazareth, at God’s direction, to fulfill the prophesy that the Messiah would be a Nazarene. One cannot locate that exact prophesy in the Old Testament. However, it is true that Isaiah 11:1 says a shoot will come up from the stump of Jesse; from his roots a Branch will bear fruit.

The passage goes on to describe all the divine attributes of Messiah. Mary and Joseph both were descended from poor, seemingly insignificant branches (shoots) of King David’s dynastic tree. But consider how cleverly the Lord hid Jesus, protected Him–in a place that few would expect to find Him–until it came time for Him to begin His public ministry.

Matthew’s is the only Gospel to describe the visit of the Magi. Luke relates the shepherds’ worship of the newborn king (poor, often disregarded Jews); while Matthew wants us to know that Jesus’ birth attracted the wonder and adoration of Gentile dignitaries. Jesus is a King for us all.

How wonderful of God the Father to have signaled His love for the poor, for His Chosen people, and for we Gentiles, as well.

I don’t know about you but I am struck by the number of times Jesus’ birth was predicted. And not just His birth, but details about His early days; who saw Him and who worshipped Him; Satan’s attempts through Herod and others to eliminate Him; and Father God’s protection of Him.

I’m also amazed about who all prophesied His birth and His role in our lives…So many voices over so many different time periods, but all correct down to every detail. If you ever wonder, as I do occasionally, if all we believe about Jesus is true (doubt is a tool of the evil one), think of these passages and their remarkable consensus, across time and situations, about the reality of Jesus. Who then can doubt?

If I were not a believer and someone walked me through today’s readings, I think I would have to become a believer! To me the Biblical evidence is both convincing and overwhelming. Arise! Shine! For God’s Light has come!

The Christmas Let Down

Scriptures: Isa 61:10-62:3; Ps 148; Gal 4:4-7; Lk 2:22-40

Hopefully you have not experienced it this year but there is a psychological phenomenon called “Christmas Letdown.”

Let me share a story to illustrate: “A number of years ago, when Lou Holtz was at the University of Arkansas, he was taking his team to play a bowl game in Tempe, Arizona. The game was to be played on Christmas day. He was asked how he felt about playing a game on Christmas, rather than being with his family. The coach answered candidly: ‘I would rather be in Tempe. After all, once you have been to church, had Christmas dinner, and opened the presents, Christmas is the most boring day of the year.’”

YIKES, Lou! Tell us how you really feel! Part of “Christmas Let Down” is the sense of “what now?” As the coach said, what’s left to expect when the gifts under the tree and in the stockings have been discovered and unwrapped? What’s there to look forward to when the festive meal with family and friends has been eaten?

I was working on continuing education to renew my psychology license while I was sick at home these past two weeks. The author of one course I took on addictions said that recovering addicts must not let themselves think of how much they enjoyed their “high.” She called this selective memory “euphoric memory,” and said it could lead a person right back into their addiction. Instead, the recovering addict should discipline their mind to think of all the ways that being clean and sober improve their life.

I think this must be the antidote to “Christmas Let Down Syndrome” as well. Rather than focusing on any disappointed expectations of our own from people or events this time of year, we should look to what our God has done already–and will accomplish for us in the future–in Jesus’ 1st and 2nd Comings. This is certainly the perspective of all of our Scripture readings appointed for today.

A. Let’s begin with Psalm 148, a clarion call to all of creation to praise God. The psalmist includes nearly all imaginable created elements and entities, and calls upon them to praise the Lord:

1. Angels and all the heavenly hosts’

2. Sun, moon and stars;

3. Heavens and rain;

4. The oceans and all creatures within them;

5. Lightning, hail, snow, clouds; and wind;

6. Mountains, hills, and all varieties of trees;

7. Wild and domestic animals, as well as birds;

8. All people from rulers to ordinary citizens, young as well as old.

The psalmist expects them all to exalt the Lord. Why? Because the Lord created them all, and because (v.14) He has raised up for His people a horn, the praise of all His saints, of Israel, the people close to His heart. A horn is a figurative term for a powerful ruler; this is a metaphor for Our Deliverer, Jesus Christ. We don’t carry on like disappointed sad-sacks after Christmas because the very date reminds us that God both created us and sent a divine deliverer to save us.

B. The prophet Isaiah (61:10-62:3) assures us that God deserves our praise because of what He has in store for us with Jesus’ 2nd Coming. After Jesus comes again as a righteous, triumphant, all powerful Judge, He will do away with all evil-doers. Oh Happy Day! Won’t that be amazing?! And He will dress those of us living then who love Him in (v.11)—garments of salvation and…a robe of righteousness. We will be as decked out beautifully, as a bride or a groom, wearing especially fine clothes, as befitting such an grand occasion. Additionally, we will be inundated by righteousness and praise…again, Oh happy day!

Chapter 62:1-3 tells us that our Lord yearns for this to happen. Both God the Father and Jesus are looking forward to this time. Jesus will rule the earth from Jerusalem. The Present poor war-torn Israel will finally be at peace, and the beauty of Jerusalem will exceed what it looked like at its height, in the days of King Solomon. In a sense, God will delight over Jerusalem as a bridegroom cherishes his bride.

C. Not only that, but as Paul tells us in Galatians 4:4-7, our status has already improved due to Jesus’ 1st Coming. Jesus Christ has paid the penalty for our sins. Additionally, by redeeming us, He has grafted us into His lineage as sons and daughters of God. He has gifted us with the Holy Spirit, whose job is to lead us into all truth. Because of both Jesus and the Holy Spirit, we are privileged to enjoy a comfortable, intimate relationship with God the Father–so much so that we might call Him Abba or Daddy.

As an aside, notice in (v.4), Paul states that Jesus was—born under law. This means that Mary was a young Jewish woman, who performed all the requirements of the Law around Jesus’ birth and her post-birth purification. I saw on the news this week that some person claimed that Jesus was/is Palestinian because Mary was a Palestinian. No. That’s just not true. This person does not know Scripture. Jesus was born to a Jewish woman and was/is Jewish—though He died to redeem the world.

D. Finally, we see from our Gospel (Luke 2:22-40), that God sent two prophets to attest to Jesus identity as Messiah days after His birth. Luke relates that Jesus is named and circumcised on the 8th day. Circumcision is an undeniable sign of loyalty to God. Additionally, at the end of 40 days, Mary and Joseph present Him at the Temple (6 miles distant from Bethlehem). Women who gave birth were considered ritually unclean for 40 days after the birthing event. Once the 40 days ended, she was required to go and present an offering that signaled her purification. The offering of 2 turtledoves instead of a calf or a lamb attests to how poor Mary and Joseph were. But note: The offering was for Mary, not for Jesus as He was without sin and did not require a sacrifice under the Law. Dr. Luke wanted us to be sure to realize that Jesus’ earthly parents were raising Him in the traditions of their Jewish faith.

While they were in the Temple grounds, they were spotted by a man named Simeon. He was an old man who had served God faithfully for years. The Holy Spirit had told him he would not die until he had seen the Messiah; then the Spirit must have alerted him that Jesus was present and was “the One.” So, he approaches the couple, takes the child and prophesies over Him, saying he is now ready to die because he has seen “Israel’s consolation.” This is another metaphor for the Messiah, who Simeon expects will comfort His people. Simeon’s Holy Spirit-inspired speech is called the Nunc Dimittis, and is almost a word for word, prayerful repetition of Luke 2:29-32—Lord, now let Your servant depart in peace, according to Your word. For my eyes have seen Your salvation, which You have prepared before the face of all peoples; to be a light to lighten the Gentiles, and to be the glory of your people Israel. (The Anglican Book of Common Prayer, 2019, p.46).

The Holy Spirit uses Simeon to announce that Jesus is to be the means of salvation for both Jews and Gentiles. He will be a cornerstone/strong support for some; and a stumbling block for others. Simeon rightly predicted that Jesus would suffer, and he accurately predicted that Mary would suffer as she watched her son suffer and die on the Cross.

Because Jewish Law required two witnesses to affirm a truth in court, the Lord provided Anna as the 2nd prophetic witness. Dr. Luke tells us she was 84 years old, having been widowed after 7 years of marriage. Anna was a major prayer warrior in the Temple. She was there so much that the priests and Levites gave her a room in which to live. She spent her days praising God and praying. She too was told by the Holy Spirit that Jesus was the Messiah. She reaffirmed this to Mary and Joseph and shared with any interested onlookers Jesus’ true identity.

According to our Scripture passages, we have no excuse to give in to “Christmas Let Down” syndrome. Instead in these days after Christmas, our hearts should be elevated by celebration and praise!

Our God has created and redeemed us. He has great, restorative plans for us that will occur when Jesus returns to earth. Meanwhile, we have been saved by Jesus’ sacrificial death on the Cross and adopted by the Father as His children and as co-heirs with Christ. Many famous Old Testament prophets foretold Jesus’ birth and 2 faithful, spirit-led New Testament persons prophets confirmed His identity even as a newborn infant. So, no matter what has happened to us this Christmas Day and following, we can and should continue to be filled with rejoicing! Emmanuel [God with us] has come to dwell among us. Come, let us adore Him.

God’s Perfect Gift

Pastor Sherry’s message for Christmas Eve, 2023

Scriptures: Isa 52:7-10; Ps 98; Heb 1:1-4; John 1:1-14

A pastor wrote, ”Yes, God is our loving and gracious Heavenly Father—but He eternally dwells in unapproachable [ineluctable, unavoidable, inescapable, certain] light. That means that God transcends us and is totally beyond us. In Theology proper a Latin term is used to capture this reality; God is defined as Deus absconditus, which translates as ‘the hidden God’. If God had not initiated revealing Himself to sinful and fallen mankind in the Garden of Eden and onward through the Old Testament; if God had not chosen to come out of His holy habitation—mankind would have hopelessly lived and died without knowledge of Him. Christmas is the time we celebrate God coming to be with us; no longer sending others, like prophets, priests, kings, and angels to give us His Word. Christmas is God Himself no longer sending–but coming.

“We should reflect upon how fortunate we are that God has mercifully and graciously come to us in our dreadfully lost condition. The writer of Hebrews described our distance from God quite simply as, “our God is a consuming fire” (Heb. 12:29). The imagery of God as [a] blazing and consuming fire aptly expresses God’s holy distance. Because of His holiness, God is eternally inaccessible to man. Our God always lives in an atmosphere of absolute purity, far too holy for mortals to ever enter. Note that Hebrews says that ‘our God is [not was!] a consuming fire.’ ”

“But to solve the problem of the God who is unapproachable, God Himself came to be with us—as one of us, to die for the whole world of lost sinners.”

The Scriptures appointed for today share with us God’s motivation for sending Jesus to earth as a tiny baby, as well as what our response to Him should be:

A. Again, the writer to the Hebrews puts it this way in our New Testament reading (Hebrews 1:1-4): In the past, God reached out to us through the prophets (v.1). But, more recently, He …has spoken to us by His Son, whom He appointed heir of all things, and through whom He made the universe. The writer to the Hebrews wants us to realize that God reached out to us first. He initiated a relationship with us, not the other way around. First, He sent many prophets (Moses, Samuel, Isaiah, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, etc.) to let us know who He is and what He wants of us. When all those efforts fell short—because human beings were lukewarm, or even outright rebellious, in their response–He sent us His One and Only Son.

But Jesus is not just a messenger of God! The Son (v.3)is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of His being, sustaining all things by His powerful word. I love the way Peterson expresses it (The Message, p.2181)By His Son, God created the world in the beginning, and it will all belong to the Son at the end. This Son perfectly mirrors God and is stamped with God’s nature. He holds everything together by what He says—powerful words! In other words, Jesus is higher than prophets or even angels. He is perfectly human, but also perfectly God. As God encased in baby flesh, He—the Holy One—can interact with sinful us.

B. The apostle John (1:1-14) begins His Gospel essentially asserting what the Writer to the Hebrews later wrotethat God intends to reveal Himself, His glory, through Jesus! Where Luke and Matthew begin with Jesus’ birth stories, and Mark, with Jesus’ entre into ministry, John takes us back to creation, before time and space began. Jesus was present at Creation. John wants to make sure we understand that Jesus, (v.1)the Word, was with God, distinct from the Father; and also that the Word was Godpart of the same deity. They share an identity of being; like the Father, Jesus is fully divine. The Apostle writes in verse 2 that the Father and the Son were in relationship with each other. Additionally, Jesus, the WORD, was the agent of Creation (v.3). God the Father planned it; but all things came into being through the words Jesus spoke. The WORD is life”the Life force.” Life comes to us not just through Him; in fact, His life is our light. Physically, we cannot live without light. Spiritually, His life enlightens (brings light into) ours. In John 8:12 Jesus saysI am the light of the world. As if to reinforce this notion, the 3rd verse of “Silent Night” statesSon of God, Love’s pure light, radiant beams from Thy holy face, with the dawn of redeeming grace, Jesus, Lord at Thy birth….

Jesus came to dispel the darkness of unbelief, sin, death, oppression, and bondage. Even though He made us, some of us will–and have– refused to believe in Him. In our rebellion, some of us (what John calls the world) will reject Him and the freedom He offers. But to those of us who have received Him (v.10)–we who have accepted His gift of Himself–He has given another gift: the right to become children of God! We are not biological heirs, not heirs through any human effort; instead, we are spiritual children of God, through Christ’s blood and the Father’s will.

In verse 14, John famously assertsThe WORD became flesh and made His dwelling among us! This is a break with all non-Christian thought: The agent of creation becomes a creature. Peterson describes it this way (The Message, p.1916)

The WORD became flesh and blood

And moved into the neighborhood.

We saw the glory with our own eyes,

The one-of-a-kind glory,

Like Father, like Son,

Generous inside and out,

True from start to finish.

Jesus came to demonstrate to us, in the flesh and through His behavior, the Father’s nature. He is God revealing God: (1) Behaviorally, (2) Relationally,

(3) Intellectually, and (4) Spiritually. He is our Savior, our Redeemer, our Healer, our Good Shepherd, our King. Our response to Him must go beyond intellectual agreement! We need to be in a personal relationship with Him.

We need to accept God’s Perfect Gift.

C. Our Psalm (98) anticipates Jesus’ 1st Coming and urges us to celebrate Him with great joy.

D. Our Isaiah (52:7-10) lesson anticipates Jesus’ 2nd Coming with the same excitement and joy.

James, the brother of Jesus, wrote (1:17)Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows. This Christmas, let us remember that God the Father has given us the Perfect Gift, His Son, Jesus Christ. Even if there are no gifts for you under your Christmas tree, God has generously sent Jesus into your life. Because of this, we are truly blessed!

Because of God’s perfect gift of Jesus, we can state the following with confidence (please repeat after me) (Borrrowed from Joel Osteen’s The Power of I Am, Faith Works, 2015):

1. “I am forgiven. I am redeemed. I am wearing a robe of righteousness. I am clothed in Christ” (p.42).

2. “God promised me beauty for ashes, joy for mourning. I’m not staying here. I’m moving forward. New beginnings are in my future. The rest of my life will be the best of my life” (p.41).

3. “I have grace for this season. I am strong in the Lord. Those who are for me are greater than those who are against me” (p.41).

4. “I am getting stronger, healthier, wiser. My youth is being renewed like the eagles” (p.38).

5. “I am free. Addictions do not control me” (p.39).

6. “I am blessed. I am prosperous. I have the favor of God” (p.38).

7. Sickness, addiction, poverty, you are temporary. I am a child of the Most High God. I am overcoming you,” by the blood of the Lamb of God (p.44).

Jesus is the gift that just keeps giving! Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord, Jesus Christ. Alleluia, alleluia!

Humility and Joy

Scriptures: Isa 61:1-4, 8-11; Ps 126; Lk 1:46b-55; Jn1:6-8, 19-28

Our Gospel today focuses on the role of John the Baptist as a forerunner to the appearance of Jesus.

“Two hundred years ago there was another man named John, a preacher of extraordinary power and influence in England and America. We know John Wesley as the founder of the Methodists. Surprisingly, however, Wesley was not the most popular preacher of his day. A man named George Whitefield preached to far more people than Wesley, baptized many more into the Kingdom of God and was a favorite of such prominent Americans as Benjamin Franklin.

“Whitefield and Wesley were the best of friends –[in fact they had met in college and, together with Charles Wesley, founded the Methodist denomination]– until they had a severe falling out over Whitefield’s strict adherence to Calvinist doctrine. Whitefield was asked following this falling out, “Do you expect that you will see John Wesley in heaven?”

“’No,’ answered Whitefield.

“’That’s what I thought you would say,’ his questioner replied.

“’But you don’t know what I mean,’ said Whitefield. ‘Wesley will be so far up there near the great Throne, I will never see him.’

“Such an answer takes a certain kind of divine humility.”

Isn’t it great to know that a famous contemporary of the founder of our denomination was such an humble guy? George Grandison Whitfield led the Great Awakening, the first revival in colonial America, in the 1740’s. His theatrical, charismatic preaching brought many Americans to a saving faith in Jesus, just as Wesley’s preaching accomplished a similar feat in England. Whitfield is said to have preached “at least 18,000 times to perhaps 10 million listeners in Great Britain and her American colonies.” (Wikipedia citation on George Whitfield). In this example, Whitfield was as humble as John the Baptist. As we read in today’s Gospel, John the Baptist humbly redirected attention from himself to Jesus.

I think we can all agree that this kind of humility is fairly rare in our culture today, as well as very admirable. You all know by now that I love college football, but the sense of entitlement and arrogance among today’s players is causing me to rethink continuing as a fan. I heard this week that some players at my favorite school were consistently late to practice and did not work as hard as they should have in the weight room. They have full scholarships to an excellent academic institution, free condo apartments, free training table meals, and free tutoring, and yet they are too full of themselves to cooperate with their coaches and to settle into the program. Instead of appreciating their opportunities, they whine about too little playing time and bail out of the team to transfer where they are promised more money. How many other students would be thrilled to have what they take for granted. They are increasingly short on gratitude and humility.

But back to our Biblical example of humility: Let’s examine John the Baptist’s humility as described in John 1:6-8, 19-28. The Apostle John began his Gospel version of Jesus’ ministry by establishing that our Lord was both present at creation and spoke it into existence. He was and is the logos, the Word Made Flesh. The words coming from the Word established the foundations, the geography, the plants and animals of the world.

The Apostle John then inserts into his account the existence and mission of John the Baptist (vv.6-8) He came as a witness to testify concerning that Light, so that through Him all men might believe. He himself was not the Light; he came only as a witness to the Light.

From there, John goes on to describe (vv.19-28) a dialogue between John the Baptist and some Priests, Levites, and Pharisees regarding his identity. They wondered if he were Elijah, come back to earth. They surmised he might be the prophet mentioned in Deuteronomy 18:15 and 18, a successor to Moses–though all the prophets from Moses until John the Baptist were successors to Moses. John the Baptist freely admits he is not the Messiah/the Christ. He also denies he is any of the others they suggest. Then he quotes Isaiah 40:3—which we read last week—and admits he is the forerunner to JesusThe voice of one calling in the desert, “Make straight the way for the Lord.” He very humbly also states (vv.26-27)I baptize with water…but among you stands one you do not know. He is the one who comes after me, the thongs of whose sandals I am not worthy to untie.”

One among you—did that mean Jesus was there in the gathered crowd, ready to be baptized by JtB? Or does it mean that Jesus was already in Israel and they had not yet encountered Him? Whichever the case, this statement should have clued them in that the Promised Messiah was coming soon. Apparently, they didn’t believe him.

Nevertheless, what a joy for JtB to realize his job was to announce the coming of the Messiah. What a joy to know that he was supposed to get the hearts of the people ready to receive Him. And how humble to later say (John 3:28-30)I must decrease so that He [Jesus] may increase.

This theme of humility and joy continues with Mary’s Magnificat, our New Testament lesson (Luke 1:46-55). The pregnant mother of Jesus realizes a great honor is being given to her. Every Jewish girl hoped to become the mother of the Messiah. The angel told Mary she would have that honor. She would be what the ancient Greek Christians would later label the theotokis or God-bearer.

In her joy, she creates a song in which she praises God because (v.49)The Mighty One has done great things for me—holy is His name. But, with great humility, she moves quickly ahead to also applaud God for what He is doing through her for His people: She celebrates Him for His mercy to those who respect and revere Him; His past works of power/His miracles; His surprising, unexpected propensity to reverse worldly fortunes. Contrary to the ways of the world, He raises up the lowly, the humble, while He brings low the lofty and arrogant. Finally, she praises Him for His fulfillment of His promises (from Genesis 12 and 22) to Israel: There would come a righteous king from the lineage of David. This Messiah will bless all the nations on earth. Can’t you just hear her joy as she delights in the plans of God the Father and in the future redeeming work of her soon-to-be-born son?

Psalm 126 is an expression of joy for God’s rescue of His people from captivity in Babylon and for the anticipated restoration of Jerusalem. This psalm is a prophesy of things to come, but is written in what’s known as “the prophetic tense,” past tense for something that has not yet happened because it will take place. After 70 years, the Persian King Cyrus, a nonbeliever, will allow the Jews to return to and rebuild their country. He sent the returnees with armed soldiers for protection and included the gold that had been taken from the Temple to finance reconstruction. Ezra the priest would oversee rebuilding the Temple. Nehemiah, the king’s trusted spokesperson, will oversee reconstruction of the city of Jerusalem.

The returning remnant were overjoyed to be going home (vv.1-2)We were like men who dreamed. Our mouths were filled with laughter, our tongues with songs of joy. The returnees rightly and humbly acknowledge it is only God who could have effected their release from Babylon. The psalm hints, too, of Jesus’ 1st Advent, when He would come to free us from the penalty for our sins.

In our Old Testament lesson (Isaiah 61:1-4, 8-11), the prophet summarizes what Jesus will do in both His first and second comings. Jesus came the 1st time to preach Good News to the Poor/the humble (in spirit and economically). He brought comfort. By paying for our sins, He brought blessed assurance. He also came to bind up or heal the broken-hearted. Jesus can heal any wound we received either as a child or as an adult. He is able. Additionally, He proclaimed freedom for captives (those who have been captured and harmed by the sins of others). He released prisoners (those whose own sins have put them in bondage).

Because of what He did in His first Advent, we can trust with faith that He will accomplish what is yet to be when He returns a 2nd time: He will judge between the good and the evil-doers. He will put down rebellion. He will eradicate evil. He will usher in the Millenium (1000 year reign of Christ). He will rule the world from Jerusalem. It will be a time of great peace and prosperity. He will provide peace and comfort to all those who mourn or grieve, exchanging their pain and grief for beauty, gladness, and praise. He will so strengthen them that they will stand as strong as oaks of righteousness, a planting of the Lord for the display of His splendor. Additionally, they will be empowered to rebuild the ancient ruins…and renew the ruined cities….

When Jesus comes again in all His glory, He will greatly bless those who love Him, materially, physically, and spiritually. Both Advents are causes for humility and joy!

Do you see the twin themes of Humility and Joy in all of our readings today? As we celebrate Jesus’ 1st Coming, we want to be both humbled and joy-filled—Humbled because we have done nothing to merit God’s great loving care for us. He planned and fulfilled His divine rescue out of His amazing, saving love for us. The Incarnation is a miracle! Jesus agreed to come to earth, leaving all of His prerogatives in heaven to live among us in poverty, and to die a horrid death to atone for our sins. We want to be joy-filled because we owe God the Father and Jesus our gratitude and praise.

Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. Alleluia, Alleluia.

Reckless Love

Pastor Sherry’s message for October 15, 2023

Scriptures: Ex 32:1-14; Ps 106:1-6, 19-23; Phil 4:1-9; Matt 22:1-14

Back in 2017, Corey Asbury, a worship leader at the Bethel Church in Redding, California, wrote a worship song called “Reckless Love.” The lyrics go like this:

Before I spoke a word, You were singing over me.
You have been so, so good to me.
Before I took a breath, You breathed Your life in me.
You have been so, so kind to me.
Oh the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God!
Oh it chases me down, fights til I’m found, leaves the 99.
I couldn’t earn it and I don’t deserve it;
Still You give yourself away.
Oh the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God!
When I was Your foe, still Your love fought for me.
You have been so, so good to me.
When I felt no worth, You paid it all for me.
You have been so, so kind to me.
Oh the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God!
There’s no shadow You won’t light up,
No mountain You won’t climb up, coming after me.
There’s no wall you won’t kick down,
Lie You won’t tear down, coming after me.

It’s pretty clear from his song that Corey Asbury has experienced God’s intentional, loving pursuit of him. He’s a grateful man. He’s fallen in love with God because God has “recklessly,” unrelentingly sought him out. We can all be grateful that our God has not given up on any of us.

Now some well-meaning critics have taken issue with Corey’s characterization of God’s love as reckless. Asbury addressed this in a facebook post:

“Many have asked me for clarity on the phrase, ‘reckless love.’ Many have wondered why I’d use a “negative” word to describe God. His love isn’t cautious. No, it’s a love that sent His Own Son to die a gruesome death on a cross. There’s no ‘Plan B’ with the love of God. He gives His heart so completely, so preposterously, that if refused, most would consider it irreparably broken. Yet He gives Himself away again. The recklessness of His love is seen most clearly in this – it gets Him hurt over and over. Make no mistake, our sin pains His heart. And ‘70 times 7’ is a lot of times to have Your heart broken. Yet He opens up and allows us in every time. His love saw you when you hated Him – when all logic said, ‘They’ll reject me,’ He said, ‘I don’t care if it kills me. I’m laying My heart on the line.’ To get personal, His love saw me, a broken down kid with regret as deep as the ocean; my innocence and youth poured out like water. Yet, He saw fit to use me for His kingdom because He’s just that kind. I didn’t earn it and I sure as heck don’t deserve it, but He’s just that good. Oh, the overwhelming, never-ending, reckless love of God.”

This is the theme of our readings today. With God’s reckless love for us in mind, let’s examine them together:

A. Psalm 106:1-6, 19-23, as we have seen before, is an historical psalm. It almost reads as a confession of Israel’s sins of not trusting in God and of continuously rebelling against Him. In today’s portion, the incident of the golden calf is memorialized. Lord, have mercy! They had just been dramatically rescued by the Lord, and then given the 10 Commandments, only to break the 1st and 2nd ones once Moses was away for 40 days. They incorrectly assumed he was dead (Remember the saying, “assume makes an a__ out of u and me”). They further erred in believing that the God Who had just made covenant with them had abandoned them! Rather than trust, pray, and wait to see what would happen, they lapsed into idolatry. What foolishness! God had proven His faithfulness to them.

He had protected them and provided for them. But, by a month or so later, they had forgotten it all. They let their fears overcome their good sense and their past experience with God.

Isn’t this so like us? Things aren’t going well for us. So, rather than remember all that God has done for us in the past, we focus on what He does not appear to be doing in the present. I recommend that you write down on a 3 by 5 card the encounters you know you have had with God—times you know He has been there for you and has arranged circumstances to bless you. Tape it to your bathroom mirror, to your dresser top, or to your car dashboard so you can remind yourself of God’s faithful, reckless love for you. He really does deserve greater faithfulness from us.

B. Our Exodus passage (32:1-14) describes the golden calf incident in greater detail. Aaron, Moses’ older brother, has just been made high priest. His job was to lead worship that glorified God; and help the people develop a right or proper relationship with the Lord. Instead of doing his God-appointed job, he caved to their demands (he became a people-pleaser rather than a God-pleaser) and dared to fashion the golden calf idol! YIKES! Later, when caught (vv.22-24), he will tell Moses he threw the people’s gold into the fire and a golden calf just jumped out. Oops, Aaron also broke the 9th commandment against lying. Additionally, the pagan idol reminded the people of pagan religious orgies. The Hebrew word for revelry is strongly suggestive of sexual misbehavior. Instead of remaining pure and chaste, as God desired of them, a number of them engaged in sexual acts abhorrent to Him.

No wonder God is disappointed and angry! Do you know that anger is the smoke whereas hurt is the burning coals underneath? Anger is generally a response to having been offended or realizing someone we love has been injured. God must have been so hurt that they would abandon Him so soon.

How ridiculous of them to want to worship something made by human hands, instead of the Creator Himself! Where’s the power in something they created? And how can one have a relationship with an inanimate gold statue?

In verses 11-13, Moses intercedes to God for them. It’s fairly easy to ask God to grant us our prayer-needs. In intercessory prayer, however, we offer up someone else’s needs. This is truly an example of loving our neighbor as ourselves. God had contemplated wiping them all out and forming a new nation from Moses and his progeny. But Moses selflessly reminds God of His long-suffering love for them. He points out how killing them all off in the desert will look to the Egyptians. He also reminds Him of His covenant promises to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob: (1) Progeny—they will multiply their descendants until their number is like that of the stars in the sky or the grains of sand on the beach; (2) Property—He means to settle them in the Promised Land; (3) Protection from enemies; (4) His Presence with them; (and,5, the promise of Prosperity He made to Abraham).

God listened to Moses. Out of His “reckless love,” God relents. Thank God for Moses’ love and loyalty to the people. Thank God for His own goodness and kindness to them and to us.

C. In our Gospel lesson (Matthew 22:1-14), Jesus continues dialoging with the chief priests and the Jewish religious leaders.

The confrontation began when they challenged His authority (21:23-27).

You may remember that two Sundays ago we learned He took them to task for their willfulness, arrogance, and hard-heartedness. Last Sunday we read that He told a parable in which He predicted His death and also that His Church will take over from the Jews the mission of leading people to God.

In today’s Parable of the Wedding Banquet (Matthew 22:1-14), He issues a third prophetic warning. The certain king is God the Father. It is God Who has prepared a wedding banquet for His Son, Jesus. The Jewish Chosen People had been invited to this banquet, (v.3)…but they refused to come. He invites them again, but some are otherwise occupied and blow off the invitation, rudely and heedlessly offending God. A confession I learned as an 8th grader, from the 1928 Episcopal Book of Common Prayer, says “We have followed too much the devices and desires of our own hearts. There is no health in us.” The devices and desires are our own plans that get in the way of following God’s plans. Others mistreat or kill the servants (the prophets) He sends to gather them in. As a result, the King (v.7) sent His army and destroyed those murderers and burned their city. (This actually happened in 70AD when the Roman Titus burned Jerusalem and destroyed the Temple. No doubt any of these religious leaders alive at that time were killed in that punitive action.) Then the King invites anyone His servants can locate—this refers to we Gentiles, to us! He even provides, out of His extravagant love for us, wedding clothes which are the righteousness of Christ. Jesus is thus warning them ahead of time that no one will enter into God’s Kingdom or heaven except through faith in Jesus Christ.

Through Jesus’ teachings and model, the Father had shown His people what was necessary for them to come to His banquet. Really, due to God’s reckless and extravagant love, all are invited (See John 3:16.). However, many refuse to believe in Jesus and miss out. Jesus is graciously and lovingly inviting the religious authorities—and us–yet again, to accept God’s invitation. The choice involves faith in Jesus. Those who reject God’s Son, will be ultimately thrown into…the darkness, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth (v.13).

Our God has gone to great lengths—including sending Jesus to die a gruesome death on a cross—to redeem us, to save us, and to win our love for Him. He so courageously puts Himself out there, daily, hourly, for each one of us. How many of us would be willing to do so for another? For years I have protected myself with a “three times rule”: Offer friendship or love 3 times and if rejected each time, I stop after three. I tend not to trust that person and to afterward hold them at arm’s length. I forgive them and pray for them, but I am unwilling to risk my heart again. But Corey Asbury contrasts my self-protective stance with that of God: Yet He gives Himself away again. The recklessness of His love is seen most clearly in this – it gets Him hurt over and over. How amazing and how brave! Rather than being as fickle and faithless as the Israelites, or as self-protective as me, let us consciously commit ourselves to returning His relentless, reckless love, now and always. Amen!

Christ, our Shepherd King

Pastor Sherry’s message for November 26, 2023

Scriptures: Eze 34:11-16, 20-24; Ps 95:1-7a; Eph 1:15-23; Matt 25:31-46

I love funny signs. Here are a few I’ve shared with you in years past and some new ones seen recently. Given it’s deer hunting season, we can appreciate these signs hung on property fences:

1. No hunting; No fishing; No nothing! Go home!

2. No trespassing! Violator will be shot; survivors will be shot again!

3. No trespassing! We’re tired of hiding the bodies.

How about these warning signs?

1. High voltage. Do not touch. Not only will this kill you, it will hurt the whole time you are dying.

2. Unattended children will be given an energy drink and a free puppy.

3. (I need this sign for my yard, since I feed 7 strays on my front porch.) No dumping cats! $750 fine and/or 90 days in jail. But, Hey! I’ll pray for you!

4. My personal favorite: Warning! If you think you can run across this pasture in 10 seconds, Don’t! The bull can do it in 9.

Finally, just for fun:

1. “Thank you for noticing this new notice. Your noticing has been noted and will be reported to the authorities.”

2. “Please do not throw your cigarette butts on the ground. The chickens come out at night and smoke them and we are trying to get them to quit.”

3. A sign outside a coffee shop: “Small coffee,” $5.00; “Small coffee, Please,” $3.00; “Hello, one small coffee, please” with a smile, $1.50.

4. On an infant’s onesie: “I just did 9 months on the inside; my parents are now in for life.”

Today we celebrate Christ the King Sunday. Our readings seem to progress, in a crescendo-like movement, like signs directing us to recognize and celebrate Christ as our Shepherd King.

A. In Ezekiel 34:11-16, 20-24—God tells us through the prophet that Jesus is our True Shepherd. The false prophets, idolatrous kings, and weak, compromised religious leaders of Israel and Judah have done a miserable job of shepherding God’s people. They have not fed the people on the Word of God; helped the sick; brought back the strays; or loved God’s people. God the Father is fed up with their ineptitude, their selfishness, their failures to protect His people, and their outright abuse of them. He says He will restore the flock and remove the selfish and self-focused shepherds. He will replace them with someone much superior.

So, this chapter contains a prophesy of Jesus. God will appoint Him as their True Shepherd (vv.23-24) I will place over them one shepherd, my servant David [it won’t be David himself, but Jesus from the lineage of David], and He will tend them; He will tend them and be their shepherd. I, the LORD, will be their God, and my servant David [Jesus] will be prince among them. I the lord have spoken. In other words, about 550 years before Jesus’ birth, and about 450 years after King David’s death, God is telling His people that an earthly king is coming who will rule wisely and justly. They needed Him and we need Him because most of our human leaders—whether religious or political–have been dismal failures. As Scripture says, He will be the One Shepherd, the Good Shepherd, the Great Shepherd, and the True Shepherd. Like His forefather, King David, Jesus will be a shepherd-king.

B. Psalm 95 is a song of joy and praise! (v.2)—Let us come before Him with thanksgiving and EXTOL [praise, worship] Him with music and song. Why? Because He is our Creator, our Maker, and the Rock of our Salvation. And in verse 7—For He is our God and we are the people of His pasture and the flock under His care [the sheep of His hand]. Again, we need God—and to be grateful to Him—because He watches over us/guards us like a Good Shepherd. Thus, we can worry less, risk more, and sleep better.

C. In Ephesians 1:15-23, Paul’s prayer is for the church at Ephesus, a church noted for its faith and love. He is not praying for material blessings for them. Instead, he wants them to have spiritual blessings: (1) to depend on the Holy Spirit for wisdom and revelation, so they will better understand God’s Word; (2) and for their spiritual eyes to be opened so that they will have hope; they will become aware of their spiritual inheritance because of Christ Jesus (adopted children of God and inheritors of heaven due to Jesus’ work on the Cross); and they will appreciate the exceeding and abundant power of the Holy Spirit—and call upon the Spirit to use this marvelous power in their behalf.

Then he declares that God the Father has made Jesus the Head (or shepherd) over everything! We, the Church, are the Body of Christ. God the Father planned for us; God the Son paid for us with His blood; and God the Holy Spirit empowers and protects us. Again, Jesus is our Good Shepherd.

D. Matthew 25:31-46—Reiterates that, at the end of time, King Jesus will assume the throne of this world. He will then judge the nations of this world (individuals too). God calls us all His sheep. There are two types of sheep: (1) the Saved—those who believe in Jesus and try to live according to His will; and (2) the Lost—those who reject Jesus and live life according to their own will. We only have to look around our world today to see examples of dictators who reject Christ and act as they are laws unto themselves. Folks like Putin of Russia and Ji Jinping of China appear to be among the Lost, especially as Ji has apparently taken it upon himself to rewrite the Bible. What hubris!

Then there are goats—whole nations (ethnos in the Greek) who have rejected Jesus. We recognize Christians by their love. In the Roman colony of Carthage in North Africa, in the second century, there was an extensive plague. Political and religious leaders took off and left the sick behind to tend themselves or to die. Furthermore, unwanted girl babies were abandoned left exposed on the garbage heaps outside the city. But the Christians of Carthage stayed behind to nurse the sick and to rescue the babies. They risked their own health. They did what no usual Roman citizen would. Carthaginian citizens were so astonished by the compassion and love of their Christian neighbors that many came to believe in Jesus as well.

Similarly, non-Christians are and will be defined by their lack of love, their lack of compassion. What kind of government builds weapons and arms but allows their people to suffer hunger? What kind of government uses noncombatant women, the elderly, and children as shields in military fights? What kind of government shoots to kill citizens trying to escape their cruelty? We can identify goats by their behavior. It is not our place to judge, but unless they undergo a heartfelt and radical change to the good, they are lost. I read recently that some of the religious authorities of Hamas told the terrorists, prior to their October 7th raid into Israel, that Allah would overlook their cruelty and barbaric treatment of Israeli women and children. What kind of god would authorize such inhumane behavior? Such people seem to resemble the kinds of folks to whom Jesus said (v.45)—I tell you the truth, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for Me. Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.

The signs are all there. Thank God, Jesus is our Shepherd King. The ancient Israelites needed Him. We need Him now. And we will need Him om the future. Christ our King is a mighty and a competent shepherd. We can trust in Him to care for us. We are safe in His arms.

Thanks be to God who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ! Alleluia, alleluia!

Both/And

Scriptures: Deut 334:1-12; Ps 90:1-6, 12-17; 1 Thess 2:1-8; Matt 22:34-46

The story is told that…

“Isidor Isaac Rabi, a Nobel Prize winner in Physics, and one of the developers of the atomic bomb, was once asked how he became a scientist. Rabi replied that every day after school his mother would talk to him about his school day. She wasn’t so much interested in what he had learned that day, but how he conducted himself in his studies. She always inquired, ‘Did you ask a good question today?’

“‘Asking good questions,’ Rabi said, ‘made me become a scientist.’

“In order to ask a good question I think you need to have noble motives behind the question. You have to want to know the truth. The Pharisees, by contrast, already had the answers to their questions. They felt they already knew the truth. How many times have we had it in for someone, asking a question designed to trap them? We do it to our loved ones all the time. In a moment like this we are not trying to learn; we are trying to injure.

“The Pharisees come to Jesus once again with a question designed to do damage to the reputation of Jesus. And once again Jesus proves he is equal to the task. Teacher, which commandment in the law is the greatest? Now, even though this question was used to test Jesus, it is nonetheless an important question. Perhaps in the life of Israel at that time [and in our lifetime today] it was THE most important question.

Jesus’ answer to their question came from the Old Testament:

Believing Jews knew the first part, love God above all things, came from Deuteronomy 6:4-5. It was part of the Shema, which believing Jews recite daily Hear O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength [might; mind]. The second, love others as you do yourself, comes from Leviticus 19:18—>Do not seek revenge or bear a grudge against one of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. Jesus combined these two and pointed out (v.40) that—> All the Law and the prophets hang on these two commandments. The Pharisees and their buddies, the lawyers who specialized in interpreting the Law, counted 613 laws handed down by Moses. Jesus summarized them all into these two, both/and. They are also represented in the shape of the Cross. The vertical is our love for God; the horizontal, our love for others. Furthermore, Jesus strongly asserts that all the Law is based on God’s love for them, as was every action and teaching of each Old Testament prophet. WOW!

Knowing they had set out to stump and to discredit Him, Jesus then turns the tables on them, asking them a riddle: (v.42)—>What do you think about the Christ? Whose son is He? They correctly answer that the Messiah comes from the lineage of King David. Now, He’s got them! “How can Messiah be both David’s son and David’s master?” He’s doing a twist on “which came first, the chicken or the egg?” Remember, a crowd was watching and listening to this debate. Many were no doubt delighted to hear Jesus turn the tables, saying in essence,”two can play this game.”

Jesus, God’s Word made flesh, clearly knows His Scripture. He refers them to Psalm 110:1, which He recites from memory—>The LORD says to my Lord: “Sit at My right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your feet.” Perhaps the Pharisees and lawyers did not know that Jesus was, through His mother Mary, a descendant of King David, making Him, in effect, David’s-many-generations-later son. Perhaps they did not believe His Father was God, through the Holy Spirit, making Him the Son of God and King David’s Master. He was and is both fully human and also fully divine.

Notice, this ends the public debate. The lawyers and Pharisees have no answer for Him. As the English Anglican Bishop, NT Wright says, “The answer the opponents couldn’t question was followed by the question they couldn’t answer.” (N.T. Wright, Matthew for Everyone: Part Two, Westminister John Knox Press, 2002, p.93.) If nothing else, this should have proven that Jesus knew and understood Scripture better than they did!

How humiliating for them! At this point, they stop trying to trip Him up in public. Now they will plot a clandestine attack, at night, in the Garden.

But let’s return to the biggest point His enemies missed: The answer to Jesus’ question of them was standing right before them, both David’s son and David’s master! Moreover, He will soon demonstrate the two greatest commandments, through His arrest, crucifixion, and death. He both loved His Heavenly Father enough to give up His life in order to do God’s will. And He loved us enough to take upon Himself the penalty for all of our sins, for all time, past, present, and future. This is extravagant love, poured out on both the vertical and the horizontal plains of the Cross. Again, as N.T. Wright writes, Jesus reveals that He is both King David’s descendant, “the true king of Israel,” and King David’s Lord and Master (Ibid, p.94).

We know the Jews were expecting a militaristic Messiah, a king who, like King David, would defeat all their earthly enemies. The book of Revelation promises us that when Jesus comes a second time, He will indeed arrive as such a conquering monarch. He will eradicate the enemies of God. He will once and for all eliminate sin and death. But in His first coming, He lived out humility and human servanthood. A military Messiah would be unlikely to inspire us to love God or to love others, especially those we dislike. Instead, God the Father knew we needed a humble, righteous, grace-filled and loving Messiah to both teach and to model for us what it looks like to love God and to love others as ourselves.

A unique and modern way of looking at it is that our suffering servant Messiah took on Satan in unarmed combat on the Cross and won! This is a king worth worshipping!

G. K. Chesterton, the famous British author and satirist, said 100 years ago—>“Jesus…tells us to love our neighbors. Elsewhere the Bible tells us Jesus said we should love our enemies. This is because, generally speaking, they are the same people” (repeated from an old sermon of mine in which, unfortunately, I did not cite the source— Sorry! But I do believe the quote is accurate.) The truth is that it is easier to love God than to love our neighbors—especially the irritating ones, or worse yet, the dangerous, sadistic, cruel, and immoral ones. We can do it, but we must be intentional about it. We begin by praying for them, again and again. We continually offer grace to them, just as Jesus has to us. We do not allow them to harm us—we can protect ourselves—but we try to act in a Christ-like manner toward them. As I have related to you before, my step-father (now deceased) was physically and verbally abusive to me during my childhood. I feared him as a child and this fear stayed with me long into my adulthood. I would not visit him and my mother without my own transportation—if things got dangerous, I wanted to have a means of escape. I had forgiven him but I did not trust him for years after I had left to be on my own. We can forgive but also protect ourselves from being re-victimized.

Our Gospel lesson today illustrates for us that Jesus was/is certainly a brilliant debater! He knows His stuff! He even knows His enemies’ motives, and beats them at their own game. He also walked His talk. Unlike His religious opponents, He was not a hypocrite. He meant what He said and said what He meant. I taught my first group of high school seniors in 1970. My wonderful principal—who mentored me as a new teacher—told me to always say what I meant and mean what I said. Especially around classroom discipline, she advised me to never threaten a disciplinary action I was unwilling to carry out. She also warned me that there would always be at least one student who would challenge whether or not I meant it by breaking the rule. She was right, just as Jesus was right.

Jesus truly knew what it meant both to love God above all things—including His own life–and to love us. May we all, by the power of the Holy Spirit, come to love God with our whole heart, soul, mind and strength. And may we also learn to love our neighbors at least as well as we love ourselves.
